The Department of English of Sadashivrao Mandlik Mahavidyalaya, Murgud successfully organized an Online Intercollege English Reading Competition, marking a significant milestone in the academic and extracurricular activities of the institution. This event was particularly noteworthy as it was conducted online for the first time, expanding its reach beyond the campus.
Traditionally, the English Reading Competition and English Handwriting Competition had been conducted offline and restricted to students of the college. For the past twenty years, the Department of English has consistently organized these competitions with the objective of enhancing students’ reading skills, pronunciation, confidence, and overall command of the English language. This year’s shift to the online mode was a pioneering initiative aimed at encouraging wider participation and adapting to changing educational practices.
The online format received an enthusiastic response from students across various renowned colleges, including D. R. Mane College, Kagal; Vivekanand College, Kolhapur; D. Y. Patil College of Engineering, Kasaba Bawada, and several other institutions. A large number of students registered for the competition, demonstrating keen interest and excitement. Participants showcased their reading skills with confidence, clarity, and expressive voice modulation, making the competition vibrant and engaging.
Students expressed great enthusiasm throughout the event, appreciating the opportunity to participate in an intercollege platform and to demonstrate their language abilities in a supportive academic environment. The competition also served as a valuable learning experience, helping students overcome stage fear and improve their oral communication skills.
The event was organized by Lt. Prof. Vinodkumar Ashok Pradhan of the Department of English, who played a key role in conceptualizing and successfully executing this first-ever online venture. Mr. Suhas Gorule provided valuable assistance and coordination support throughout the event, ensuring its smooth conduct.
The initiative was strongly encouraged and inspired by Principal Dr. Shivaji Hodage, whose guidance and motivation enabled the department to undertake this innovative academic activity.
The success of the Online Intercollege English Reading Competition has opened new avenues for future academic collaborations and larger-scale participation. The Department of English plans to continue such initiatives in the coming years to promote language proficiency and academic excellence among students.
